"Working as a Sterile Services Technician has made me realize that not all important jobs are in the front line. Although often times our job is “thankless”. Having the knowledge that you were able to do that vital part in delivering instruments efficiently and accurately, is already a reward in itself. We are what you may call key players behind the hospital scene. I am pleased to be part of it." Flor Espartero, Sterile Service Technician, Crawley HSDU“You feel that when you leave work what I do could have saved someone’s life. Without us the hospital wouldn’t have clean equipment. However small our job may seem it may still help to save someone’s life and that is guaranteed satisfaction. Our job includes the collection and preparation of surgical instruments as well as the maintenance and up keep of them. The smallest fault could have a ghastly effect in surgery, or severe consequences. I don’t think that we always get the credit we deserve as our role is pivotal and the hospital wouldn’t run without us as there couldn’t be any operations but most people don’t know we exist.” Trudi Charnock, Sterile Service Technician, Day Shift“I have been a sterile service technician for ten years, first in the NHS, then for private care before I returned to the NHS. First and foremost I love my job and the team work is very good” Marion Kinuthia, Sterile Service Technician, Day Shift“It is a very friendly place to work. Everybody respects each other, and it is like we are a big happy family. We have all worked together for a long time and know each other really well.” Damiam Janicki, Sterile Service Technician, Day Shift“I started working here straight from college. I always wanted to work in the public sector doing something to help people and I suppose through this job I am helping people indirectly. I see this as a stepping stone but also as the type of job I want to do. We have a great deal of responsibility as we have to sterilise all the instruments that are used on patients." Callum Johns, Sterile Service Technician, Day Shift “I am very satisfied with my job and the best bit is definitely the team work. I started working here in 2008 and I really like it, it is also convenient as I live just a 20 minute walk from the hospital. Everyone gets on well and knows each other, it is a very friendly environment.” Tennakoon Wanigasekara, Sterile Service Technician, Night Shift“I like the job very much and the hours are good. I work 4pm - midnight and this allows me to take my children to school and pick them up before I start work. I like all of the areas of work, although my favourite areas are probably endoscopy and the washroom. We all get on well together.” Ernan Arguelles, Sterile Service Technician, Night Shift
