Staff development

At all annual achievement reviews (appraisals), the training and development of the staff member is reviewed and a personal development plan is formulated for the following year.

All biomedical scientists are required to undertake continuous professional development (CPD) in line with national standards provided by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS). Staff are encouraged to attend relevant internal and external courses.

MLA staff are also actively encouraged to participate in continuous professional development (CPD) activities and we are currently able to offer the opportunity to take an NVQ level 3 Diploma in Laboratory and Associated Technical Activities.

The laboratory is IBMS accredited to train biomedical scientists for Certificate of Competence (required for HCPC registration) and for specialist training in Medical Microbiology.

Opening hours

The microbiology laboratory is based at Crawley Hospital.

Monday to Friday: 9am – 5:15pm
Saturdays: 9am – 1pm
Sundays & bank holidays: 9am – 1pm

An on-call service exists for all urgent samples out of hours. All biomedical scientists are expected to participate in the on-call rota.
