What do we do?
We provide a 24 hour Haematology, Chemical Pathology & Blood Transfusion service to our patients within East Surrey and Crawley Hospitals and also to local GP surgeries within Surrey & Sussex. The main laboratory is based at East Surrey Hospital with a small laboratory at Crawley Hospital. We employ some 45 staff including Medical Laboratory Assistants and Biomedical Scientists who are supported by Consultant Haematologists and a Consultant Chemical Pathologist. The laboratory is managed by a Lead Biomedical Scientist for each discipline who reports to the Pathology Services & Quality Manager.
We work closely with our colleagues in Pathology Reception who prepare samples for analysis.
Our modern laboratory is equipped with the latest technology including:
• iLab- Apex Pathology computer system (electronic ward /GP test ordering)
• Sysmex XEs analysers with the HST track and TS500 specimen archiver
• IL TOP 500 Coagulometers
• Immucor: Galileo & Echo Blood Grouping analysers
• Roche Biochemistry analysers.
The Integrated Blood Sciences department process in excess of 4.5 Million tests per year.
Government statistics show that 70% of all clinical decisions made are as a result of a pathology test.
There is an established Quality Management System in place, based on Total Quality Management principles. The department is fully accredited with CPA (UK) Ltd, and is compliant with the Blood Safety and Quality Regulations (2005).
