Cellular Pathology

What do we do?

Cellular Pathology
The Cellular Pathology Department receives samples of tissue which are processed and stained to produce thin sections for diagnosis by a Pathologist. We also receive and process diagnostic cytology (non-gynae) samples as well as providing an Andrology service.

Specimens come from within East Surrey Hospital and from GPs in the surrounding area.

The department has 18 laboratory staff, including Biomedical Scientists and Medical Laboratory Assistants, and six Consultant Histopathologists, all supported by four Medical Secretaries.

The laboratory is equipped with:

• Apex Pathology computer system
• Two Peloris Tissue Processors running Xylene free processing
• Bond 3 Immunostainer
• Benchmark XT immunostainer
• Fully documented processes for all aspects of the laboratory, supported by the iPassport computer system for document control

We currently receive approximately 22,000 histology samples per year, together with approximately 2200 non-gynae cytology samples and 300 andrology samples
