Miss Karen Jermy, gynaecology oncology lead and her team of consultants and nurse specialists run a multitude of fast track and one stop clinics specifically catered to patients that are referred via their GP on a urgent suspected cancer pathway.
These clinics include:
-
Pelvic mass clinic – intended for cases of confirmed ovarian masses that are either complex or of uncertain nature.
-
One stop fast track clinics – intended for patients with symptoms requiring urgent assessment and investigation. If clinically appropriate, patients will have access to an ultrasound scan (either vaginal or abdominal) and a hysteroscopy in a single visit.
-
Outpatient Hysteroscopy clinics – Our outpatient hysteroscopy clinics are designed to offer a comprehensive assessment and treatment in a single visit for patients experiencing abnormal vaginal bleeding and those with abnormalities detected on pelvic ultrasound scans.
-
Colposcopy clinics – A colposcopy is a simple procedure that examines the cervix, which is the lower part of the womb located at the top of the vagina. It is typically performed when your cervical screening test (smear test) indicates the presence of abnormal cells in the cervix. This procedure can confirm whether the cells are indeed abnormal and help decide if treatment to remove them is necessary.
If you have been referred via your GP on the urgent suspected cancer pathway, we aim to see you in one of these clinics within 7 -14 days.
These clinics are based in the Aldrich Blake Unit at East Surrey Hospital and the Women’s Centre at Crawley Hospital.
During your appointment
When you attend for your first appointment, you will be seen by one of the team of specialist doctors and nurses who are experienced in gynaecological cancer and they will discuss with you any tests or investigations recommended.
Our aim is to complete all necessary tests and investigations during this visit. However, if additional tests or investigations are required on another day, we will discuss this with you during your consultation.
Tests and investigations include:
-
Height and weight
-
Blood tests
-
Abdominal or vaginal ultrasound scans
-
CT scans
-
MRI scans
-
Biopsy
After your appointment
We will inform you of your results as soon as possible via letter or telephone and any follow up care if required.
What happens if I am diagnosed with a gynaecological cancer?
For the small percentage of investigations that do reveal a gynaecological cancer, we hold a weekly multi-disciplinary team network meeting with our dedicated cancer services team here at SASH, along with experienced medical professionals in the field at The Royal Surrey County Hospital.
We will discuss an agreed treatment plan for you and will keep you and your family undated and informed along the way at all times.
Our aim is to get the treatment plan organised and implemented for you in the most compassionate, concise and definitive way.
We realise that this can be a daunting time for you and we are always on hand to discuss any queries or concerns.
