Surrey and Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust provides an endoscopy service at East Surrey Hospital and Crawley Hospital.
We provide a comprehensive range of diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy procedures. These include gastroscopy, colonoscopy, ERCP, cystoscopy and bronchoscopy. This is a high-volume unit performing approximately 15,000 procedures per year.
The standards of the unit are high and we maintain a rigorous, prospective audit.
The measured outcomes of the endoscopy procedures, including the successful completion of the procedure and patient comfort scores, all exceed the highest standards laid down by the British Society of Gastroenterology.
East Surrey Endoscopy Unit
The East Surrey Endoscopy Unit is a state-of-the-art facility with four procedure rooms and allows us to offer the further services of colorectal screening and gastrointestinal physiology assessments. The Unit is recognised as a training centre for gastroenterology and surgical trainee doctors.
All training lists are directly supervised by consultant endoscopists. The Unit is situated on the ground floor in the green zone.
Crawley Endoscopy Unit
Crawley Endoscopy Unit is run by the same endoscopy staff and works to a high standard of clinical care. There are two procedure rooms which allow the provision of diagnostic gastroscopy, sigmoidoscopy and colonoscopy.
The Unit is situated on the fourth floor in the red zone.
Capsule Endoscopy
Capsule endoscopy is the most sensitive way of imaging the small bowel. It is non-invasive, painless, and consequently exceptionally well-tolerated.
Patients attend the hospital for an hour and the capsule transmits pictures over a 12 hour period to a low profile portable data recorder worn around the waist.
Capsule endoscopy is an ambulatory test that occurs as patients go about their normal day. The images are then examined by the consultant in the following few days.
The capsule itself is disposable and does not need to be reclaimed.
