Mr Simon MonkhouseUpper GI surgery

Mr Simon Monkhouse

Consultant upper GI & laparoscopic surgeon

Mr Monkhouse provides the full range of upper GI emergency and elective services including endoscopy, gallbladder surgery, hernia surgery and anti-reflux surgery. All procedures are carried out using the laparoscopic key-hole approach.

Mr Monkhouse studied at the University of Cambridge and was awarded prizes for academic distinction. He trained in surgery in the South West of England and was awarded “Trainee of the Year” in 2010. After training, he spent time in Newcastle doing a dedicated bariatric surgery fellowship. Professional memberships include the Association of Laparoscopic Surgeons (ALS), the Association of Upper GI Surgeons (AUGIS) and the British Obesity and Metabolic Surgery Society (BOMSS).

His specialist interest is in bariatric surgery and along with a full multidisciplinary team, he provides a obesity surgery service in conjunction with St George’s Hospital. He has a particular interest in patient safety and designed a national protocol for emergency doctors to look after post-operative patients in this field.

Mr Monkhouse was the recipient of the “Your Care Matters: improving the patient experience” award at the SASH Annual Staff Awards of Excellence 2015. This award is presented to a person whose great work is repeatedly highlighted.

Outside of work, he is happily married with two young sons.
