Pathology department

 

 

Requesting restrictions have been lifted, however please note that due to the ongoing COVID-19 situation:

  • there may be extended turnaround times for some tests, and
  • a minority of tests involving manual procedures and/or high-risk samples may continue to be restricted

 

The pathology department provides inpatient and outpatient laboratory diagnostics to SASH patients, and a direct access service to 82 GP practices.

SASH serves a catchment area of 535,000, plus the population passing through Gatwick Airport. The pathology service provides a comprehensive, timely, cost effective, clinically-led service, comprising the following laboratories:

  • Clinical biochemistry
  • Haematology
  • Microbiology
  • Blood transfusion
  • Histopathology and mortuary
  • Cytology (non-gynae)
  • Phlebotomy service (blood collection)

All laboratories (with the exception of Microbiology) are based at East Surrey Hospital. Microbiology is based at Crawley Hospital. Phlebotomy has services at Crawley Hospital, East Surrey Hospital and Horsham Hospital.
