Early Pregnancy Unit

The Early Pregnancy Unit (EPU) supports women up to 16 weeks of pregnancy with concerns such as vaginal bleeding, abdominal pain, history of recurrent miscarriages (two or more consecutive miscarriages), or ectopic pregnancy by appointment only.

The unit is open 8am – 6pm Monday- Friday. Referrals to the EPU are made by the ultrasound department, GPs, emergency department, and midwives.

Contact the Early Pregnancy Unit

Patients can self-refer for advice through the telephone triage clinic 01737 231824.

This is open Monday to Friday between 9am-12pm and weekends between 10am-12pm.

Outside of these times, please leave one voicemail message with clear details. This voicemail will be returned during the next telephone triage opening time.

If you are bleeding heavily, soaking through more than two pads per hour, or in severe pain please attended your local accident and emergency department.

Please note
Updated guidance on relative restrictions in the Early Pregnancy Unit and Gynaecology Assessment Unit. Thursday 2020.The Early Pregnancy Unit (EPU) is unfortunately unable to accommodate accompanying relatives in the waiting area due to limited space to maintain social distancing. It is recognised that our patients need support from relatives, so one designated, consistent relative can be present outside the unit and be called upon to accompany in the scan room and for any consultation thereafter. To ensure safety, leaving your relative in the main hospital corridor, please present yourself to the EPU reception and inform the receptionist you have a relative accompanying you. You will be given a buzzer to give to your relative with instructions that your relative can enter and attend when the buzzer goes off. Your relative must stay in the green zone on the first floor and hold the buzzer in their hand to ensure they are notified, whilst socially distancing from others. This new process aims to offer our women the support they need in the department whilst maintaining the safety of others. The EPU team are continuously reviewing this and will update guidance accordingly. With sincere apologies, Early Pregnancy and Gynaecology team.
