Colposcopy Service

All adult women within the SASH geographical area with abnormal cervical screening results are referred to the Colposcopy Clinic held in the Women’s Centre at Crawley Hospital.

Patients with abnormal screening tests are referred by the Trust’s Pathology Laboratory, based at East Surrey Hospital, direct to the colposcopy clinics.

They will be given an appointment within 2 to 8 weeks depending on the grade of abnormality.

Since June 2012 an extra test was introduced by the Trust’s pathology laboratory, as part of the national cervical screening programme.  All cervical screening test results showing borderline changes or mild dyskaryosis will automatically be tested for high risk HPV test (Human Papilloma Virus).

If high risk HPV is detected, the patient is automatically referred directly to the colposcopy unit and extra clinics have been added to cope with demand.

At the clinic, the patient’s cervix will be examined and they may be treated on the day of the appointment, if appropriate.

The Trust’s colposcopy service is regulated by the South East Cancer Screening Quality Assurance Reference Centre.
