Chris Turner and Liz Darragh, breast care clinical nurse specialists, are holding a Carers Information and Support Day offering support to local people who are carers. This takes place from 10.30am to 2.30pm on 16 June in the hospital’s Postgraduate Education Centre.
Anyone who is a carer is welcome to attend and can just turn up on the day.
A number of local support organisations will be on hand to offer advice and support including: Age UK, The Olive Tree, Macmillan, Crossroad Care, East Surrey Carers, Carers Support, Virgin Care, The Brigitte Trust, Cancervive, and Stepping Stones.
Chris said: “People who act as carers don’t necessarily class themselves as carers as they view what they do as simply looking after their loved ones. This event is about recognising the care and support they give each and every day. Caring for someone can be both physically and emotionally draining and we want to show people that there is help out there.”
Liz added: “When someone becomes ill and needs to be looked after the whole family can feel the effect. However, there is plenty of support available and many organisations that are able to help – some focus on emotional and psychological needs whilst others offer more practical support, for example someone to do your shopping or provide respite.”
