Results from a national survey of NHS staff ranks Surrey and Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust in the top 20% of hospitals across the country for motivation, engagement and as a place to work and to receive treatment.
Staff have rated engagement and their opportunity to be involved in the Trust as one of the top scoring areas making them feel more motivated and part of a wider team delivering excellent healthcare.
Michael Wilson, chief executive, Surrey and Sussex Healthcare Trust said: “I am delighted that the results show just how positive our staff feel about being part of the Trust as there is good evidence of a strong link between a high level of staff engagement and the delivery of high quality care and a positive experience for our patients.
“We have made it a priority to encourage our staff to get involved and to give them opportunities to influence and inform our plans for the future and the ways in which we continue to develop and improve the experience of the people we care for.”
“I am proud that this has also led to high scores around staff motivation and support from managers, which is especially encouraging given the pressures we have experienced locally and in the NHS more generally.”
A total of 56% of staff from across the organisation responded to the survey with the results showing a significant increase in the numbers of staff reporting good communications between senior management and staff and in those who would recommend the Trust as a place to work or receive treatment. This very positive response from staff also put Surrey and Sussex Healthcare Trust in the top 20% nationally for:
- Job satisfaction and motivation
- Effective team working
- Fairness and effectiveness of incident reporting procedures
- Job related training, learning and development
- Support from senior managers
- Using feedback from patients and service users to make informed decisions about the care they provide
- Staff recommending the Trust as a place to work or receive treatment
Michael Wilson added: “As well as showing us where we are getting it right the results also give us a valuable insight into areas where we need to focus – which is increasing appraisal rates.
“This was not unexpected as we have experienced some busy periods – it is encouraging however that those appraisals which were completed were well-structured.
“I am proud of the professionalism of all our staff; their commitment to putting people first and especially proud that they feel so engaged and motivated and the positive impact this has on the people we care for.”
