It all starts with an introduction – that’s the message behind a campaign staff at Surrey & Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust are supporting.
Health bosses at the Trust, which runs East Surrey Hospital, are reminding all staff to introduce themselves to patients and their families the first time they meet them.
The campaign was started by a doctor called Kate Granger after she became a patient. She found that she didn’t know many of her carers by name, and this affected her experience.
Trust Chief Executive Michael Wilson said: “We know from patient feedback that knowing staff by name means a lot and can affect their overall experience. Although staff wear name badges, they are often hard to read so we are encouraging every single member of staff to back the campaign by remembering to always start their conversations with patients by giving their name and job title. It’s sometimes very small simple things that can make a real difference and help to put patients at ease.”
