Validity of results
Quality assurance programmes are in operation to ensure a high degree of accuracy and precision of all tests. However, if you doubt the validity of a result please let us know at once. Most samples are kept for 2—3 days and during this time it is usually possible to check any result.
Turnaround times
The department prioritises all work received from A&E, ITU, SCBU and other critical care units, together with any other emergency samples. The department aims to ensure the results of the investigations for the immediate management of the patient will be available on the pathology computer system within 1 hour of receiving the samples.
All other inpatient samples together with GP and out-patient work identified as urgent are prioritised. The department aims to ensure the routine investigations will be available on the pathology computer system within 2 hours of receiving the samples.
Samples received from GP surgeries and out-patient clinics samples will be processed on the day of receipt. All authorised surgery results are transmitted via the GP links at regular intervals. Please indicate a telephone number on the request form in order that the laboratory may phone a result out of hours if required.
