Mortuary

The mortuary, managed by Surrey and Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust, serves both the Surrey HM Coroner and the West Sussex HM Coroner. The mortuary is located on the ground floor next to pathology in East Surrey Hospital.

The mortuary has an HTA license and provides secure, cold storage for all hospital deaths and community deaths reported to the Coroner, and a post-mortem service to both the HM Coroners and the hospital.

The mortuary deals with coroners, consented and forensic post-mortems. Paediatric post-mortems are transferred to St Georges Hospital, Tooting.

The mortuary works closely alongside the bereavement office which manages issuing Medical Certificate of Cause Death and facilitates the completion of cremation paperwork. The bereavement staff also work closely with the families, returning property and valuables, and liaising with the mortuary to arrange viewings where requested of the deceased.
