All of our Biomedical Scientists are encouraged to cross-train in all sections of the department. The department is an approved training site with the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS) for both the registration portfolio and the Specialist Portfolio. We encourage and support our staff to attend relevant professional external meetings and courses, and we hold regular Continuous Professional Development presentations: some recent topics include, Acute Leukaemia and Adrenal Function. Our aim is for everyone to ‘learn something new everyday’, as it is through continuous learning that we can maintain safety and give the best possible care to our patients.
The Biomedical Scientists in the department mentor our trainees.
We are able to offer staff with degrees acceptable to the IBMS, the opportunity to train as a Biomedical Scientist and we are proud to be able to support career progression here at East Surrey Hospital.
The laboratory is open 24 hours a day and we run a shift system overnight and at the weekends to service the laboratory work from the hospital. Our core hours are from 8 a.m. – 8 p.m. Monday to Friday. Our staff are required to work on the laboratory shift rota system that provides a 24/7 testing service to our in- patients which involves working both weekend and night shifts.
