Children staying on East Surrey Hospital’s Outwood ward were delighted to receive a huge donation of new toys, thanks to the kindness of local dad Nigel Billings and his team at Field Systems Designs.
The Dorking-based company raised money in support of Ellie-Mae, Nigel’s young daughter, who was being cared for on the ward. This is the second donation of toys the company has made within two years.
Mr Billings said: “Ellie-Mae was diagnosed at East Surrey Hospital with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia in June 2013 and has been undergoing treatment at both the Royal Marsden and East Surrey Hospitals ever since and will continue chemotherapy until November. She has had multiple and prolonged periods in both hospitals during this time and both hospitals have become second home to her.
“Since Ellie’s diagnosis my employer, Field Systems Designs Ltd, have been very supportive and have held two family fun days with proceeds from both going to buy toys, games and other items to help stock the toy rooms of both hospitals.
“Like any toddler Ellie just wants to play and the toys give her – and others on the ward – have some normality and the donations seemed like the natural thing to do, thanks to the generosity of my colleagues, suppliers and customers at Field Systems Designs,” he said.
Sharon Chambers, Paediatric Unit Ward Manager at East Surrey Hospital, said: “Our young visitors’ faces lit up when they saw the new toys – it was wonderful to see them so overjoyed, particularly as they are going through difficult circumstances. It really helps make their time with us more happy.”
Michael Wilson, Chief Executive of Surrey and Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust, said: “On behalf of our children’s ward and all who work for our Trust I’d like to thank Nigel and the team at Field Systems Designs so much for their generosity in providing these wonderful new toys for the children on Outwood Ward.”
