Fundraising Tips

Steps to Success

  • Be creative when choosing your event, but remember sometimes the simple ideas are the best.
  • Avoid holding your event on the same day as a big sporting occasion, bank holiday or when there is a big local event.
  • Once you have chosen your event, make a list of what will be involved and decide on your budget. Think about who you will need to help you and how much time you will need to prepare for it.
  • Publicise your event using banners, invitations, posters, social media and local media. If you have a personal story as to why you are raising money for a specific fund this will increase interest.
  • Don’t be afraid to negotiate or ask for good and services to be donated for your event.
  • Enjoy it!

Keeping it Legal

Some types of fundraising can require licences, permits and to adhere to certain laws.

Collections: All charity collections, including street and door-to-door collections and collections at fun days and in pubs and offices all require permits. These can be obtained by your local authority.

Raffles and lotteries:: If your raffle is completed within 24 hours you do not need a license, but if it will take place over a few days you will need a small lottery licence.

Food and drink: A premises license is required to sell alcohol to the public, some places may already have a licence but make sure you check with the person in charge of the venue. Any food your are providing or selling at an event must adhere to basic hygiene standards.
