Known accessibility issues and disproportionate burden

While we are continually working to improve the accessibility of our website, we are aware of the following issues:

  • PDF accessibility: We are updating active content, such as patient leaflets, but it may not be possible to convert some older materials to the preferred HTML.
  • Image descriptions: While most images on our site include alternative text, some may not. We are actively working to rectify this in all future content.
  • Video subtitles: Although our main content on YouTube includes subtitles, some specialised content may lack accurate captioning.
  • Browser compatibility: We aim to support all major browsers and their accessibility features, but we cannot guarantee compatibility with older or future versions.

Exemptions

Certain types of content are exempt from accessibility regulations, including:

  • Pre-recorded audio and video published before 23 September 2020.
  • Live audio and video streams.
  • Heritage collections, such as scanned manuscripts.
  • PDFs and other documents published before 23 September 2018.
  • Maps.
  • Third-party content not under our control.
  • Intranet or extranet content published before 23 September 2019 (unless revised).
  • Archived websites.

We are committed to enhancing our digital materials to meet current accessibility standards where possible.
