On Wednesday 15 May 2024, three dedicated nursing and midwifery colleagues joined Tina Hetherington, the Chief Nurse, to represent Surrey and Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust at Westminster Abbey, for a special service commemorating the life of Florence Nightingale. This attendance was part of our ongoing partnership with the Florence Nightingale Foundation (FNF).
The event, titled "A Service to Commemorate the Life of Florence Nightingale," aimed to celebrate the contributions of nursing and midwifery, highlighting the importance of mutual support in overcoming challenges. A highlight of the service was the symbolic procession of a lamp from the Florence Nightingale Chapel to the High Altar, carried by a group of nurses. This act honours Nightingale's legacy and her lasting impact on the nursing profession.

Tina Hetherington, Chief Nurse at Surrey and Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust said:
“Florence Nightingale set the standards for modern nursing and her legacy is a light of inspiration for us all. This service not only commemorates her remarkable contributions but also reinforces the vital role of compassion and resilience in our profession. We are honoured to participate in this meaningful tradition and continue her mission of excellence in healthcare."
The Westminster Abbey was filled with 2,000 Nurses and Midwives from the UK and across the world, marking a highly prestigious annual event. The service provided an opportunity for nurses to rededicate themselves to the profession and give thanks to all nurses and midwives everywhere.
We are proud of our colleagues for participating in this significant event, emphasising SASH’s commitment to the values and traditions that continue to influence high-quality healthcare.
