As the Monday 27 May 2024 bank holiday approaches, Surrey and Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust (SASH) is urging the public to carefully consider their healthcare options before heading to the emergency department. Considering alternative options will ensure emergency services remain available for those in genuine need of them.

Alternative services:

Due to the anticipated high demand, SASH advises that individuals arriving at the emergency department over the bank holiday weekend may be redirected to other NHS services, if deemed medically appropriate. Various alternatives such as Urgent Treatment Centres, GP practices, NHS 111, walk-in centres and pharmacies can provide quick medical assistance for non-life-threatening conditions.

Emergency calls:

It’s crucial to reserve emergency calls to 999 or visits to the East Surrey Emergency Department for genuine emergencies, such as severe illnesses or life-threatening situations.

Managing common illnesses:

If GP surgeries are closed, you can manage common illnesses like coughs, colds and stomach upsets at home, with guidance from a pharmacist or NHS 111. Community pharmacies under the pharmacy first service can address seven common conditions, such as sinusitis, sore throats and urinary tract infections in women. To find pharmacies that are open over the weekend, visit the NHS website (find a pharmacy).
